I was reading thru Greyhawk this weekend and little ides hit me. In a nutshell, use chance to “Open Door" as s simple x in d6 roll for any ability check.

  1. I've been doing this forever... without the modifier. For me it's been class: 1 for humans, 2 for demihumans, three if it is somewhat under your class, four if it is directly under your class (a MU knowing something magical, a dwarf knowing something underground-related, a cleric recognizing a religious symbol, etc).

I like using the attribute modifier better in theory, but players seem to not mind the class based version. It makes the MU feel like a magic user, the cleric feel like they know more about the gods, etc.

I wrote a new RPG a year ago, whole cloth new system. But it amused me that all checks were d6, 1-5, and semi-like the way I run D&D.

  2. Great idea, Evan Edwards. An intuitive and very handy rule of thumb that could be used in any old D&D. Perfect for "D&D From Memory".
