Very cool post. I likewise cut my teeth on Holmes (after a buddy of mine got the box set), but from there I moved on to AD&D 1e, later picking up Cook Expert (and being somewhat befuddled as to how it worked with AD&D); y local group then moved on a bit later to Bard Games' "Arcanum" system as our main game. As a result, I only much later got turned out to CSIO, Arduin and the rest of the old school goodness that proliferated back in the day.
